Bittersweet Is Backwards

A Better Spoken Aloud Poem

Bittersweet is Backwards.

Sweetness comes first. Bitter is the after taste. Once the sweet chocolate is swallowed, bitter envelopes your tongue.

So you have left me, so has sweet.

Sweetness has passed and only bitter remains, growing with every inkling of sweet that fades.

My mouth, my mind, my heart cannot sense sweet, not in the same capacity.

My entire being has been consumed by bitterness.

Ignored messages, dropped conversations, secret plans. Bitter.

Being effortlessly replaces, easily swayed, swiftly tricked. Bitter.

Nostalgia is now coated in bittersweet.

Sweet was when you said "I love you" first. Sweet was when you told me to cry freely.

Sweet Was...it Was. It no longer is.

Bitter is how abruptly stopped feeling love. Bitter is when you called my tears "exhausting".

Bitter Is...it persists, and it spreads.

Bittersweet is Backwards...sweet comes first.

Bitter is quick to eclipse my being as sweetness dies, leaving whatever is left to sense tainted.

When I remember a gift you gave me, whether it be physical, a moment, words, or a kiss...is no longer felt.

Every song, movie, person, object that I once held as sweeter than any dark fruit is now flavored and scented of Bitter.

The Sweet and Love has melted away. Only Bitter and Broken describe my tongue.

Bittersweet is Backwards...and now so am I.
