Be What You Wish

A Poem of the American Dream

Be what you please!

As a child they fill your mind with wonder and with ease.

You can do anything, like no one else can!

They lie to you with a smile befitting the bogeyman.

Make it through high school, you’ll go places!

All say as they build you up as you start to question their many faces.

College is for winners those who wish to succeed!

Now pushed into a box of ‘suggestions’ they force you to heed.

You have your degree; there is no way you can lose!

Your mind now tired your imagination and self-worth now bruised.

Getting a job is easy – you should try harder!

You are exhausted from applications; desperate enough to barter.

No one will hire you? What about your degree?

The weeks have turned to months you are becoming too far gone to agree.

Flipping burgers? Get an education trash!

“They know nothing!” You mutter. On the verge of acting rash.

By the time I was your age I had a house, a family, and a well-paying job.

Times are different. For someone who’s supposed to be wise; they are an ignorant snob!

Looks like being lazy isn’t working, try something new!

You search for fresh options. No one is hiring someone like you.

You should have tried to getting a job sooner. Your degree is now out of date.

That sentence from this person now fills you with hate.

Effort shows in where you are. Careers are easy to fish!

You feel your heart die as they finish their spiel with a twist:

It’s a free country, you can be what you wish!
