Be Careful What You Wish for
A Poem of Loss

Like a broken clock, time stands still
Knowing what will never be mine
Makes me feel broken and empty inside
I'll never hold those little toes
Never an innocent giggle
The eyes that still believe
That the world isn't as bad as it seems
Will never be glowing and looking at me
Be careful what you wish for
Because one day it might come true
Even if you've changed your mind
There's not much you can do
So I'll put away those dreams of you
Which I'd never wanted before
I'll shed a million tears
And lock them in my drawer.
