Barren Dreams

Her Story

By Andrew PeterkinPublished 6 years ago 1 min read

Young, careless, and free.

She dreamed of victory.

MLK, Rosa Parks, Obama.

She knew her pigment,

Exclaimed greatness.

She was more than,

Just a figure,

An object.

She,

A woman to be loved,

Respected.

She could become anything.

A doctor,

A lawyer,

Even an actress.

Only her own limited imagination,

Confined her within these cell walls.

She knew nothing could stop her,

If she just believed.

And in her innocence,

She met a man who,

Guaranteed her these things.

Who promised her love.

Who promised her bells,

And dresses flowing,

With silk and tapestry.

Forgot to tell her,

His age was twice Methuselah

Who had forgotten to tell her,

His finger indented by metal.

Shattered a woman’s glass heart,

When at home.

She did not know it would lead,

To broken promises.

She did not know,

That this intercourse,

Was inter-state.

That He was a caterer,

To any flavour of ice-cream.

She did not know,

That He was just another Judas,

That his own bowels would,

Spill forth after every deed.

Reckless this would just be,

Another 401,

Where accidents happen.

She did not know,

This promise ring,

Was precious to only her.

That this love would evaporate,

Like Frodo.

As she lay there upon his bed,

He placed the napkin to his mouth.

Wiping away the excess,

That he did not desire to take home.

It is done he said.

As if finished,

Like a meal,

Fine dining,

That he would not pay for.

She cried as she bore witness,

To this pain.

She cried as she bore witness,

To her abandonment.

She cried as she bore witness,

To her shame.

She cried as she bore witness to her first son.

If she were Mary,

This marriage would,

Have been a joyous occasion.

As her child came forth,

Into the loving hands,

Of a loving Father.

His purpose engraved,

In her womb and before.

But instead,

Like her womb,

Now empty.

The space where,

This man once resided,

Now barren.

Her duty,

To govern the flesh,

Born of her flesh.

Without ends,

Or means.

This young girl,

With dreams,

Oprah,

An Actress,

An Architect,

The next Prime Minister,

Now Barren Womb,

Now Barren Dreams.

Her hopes Unfertile.

Her daughter grown,

With hopes of Fertile Dreams.

Meets a man,

Who promises her the world.
