At the End

It comes to this.

Maybe, they thought,

They'd really made it

New, naive hope upspringing

They could start over together

Press 'reset' on the world

That had left them to perish

...

She makes one wrong step

Puts one foot down just a half-second early

But it's enough

...

Shoelaces tangle and trip

She falls quietly while he runs

They push forward, bawling

Blistered skin on rotting bone

Eyes wide with missing lids

One stumble and it's over

She gets to watch them destroy her

...

Skin is shredded, fingers torn away

Limbs cleaved, neck clawed

Lips crack and gums fill

Eyes heavenward, mouth open

She doesn’t scream

She looks ahead

...

He watches them devour her

Greyed eyes rolling, twisted satiation

They don't get to start over

His lungs burn and his knees crumble

This is the end

This is the end

This must be the end
