anxiety is a ghost
but the haunting is constant,
unexpected.
like when you feel at
peace and
suddenly everything goes cold.
almost as though your heart
should stop but instead
your heart is
racing uncontrollably.
shaky hands,
increased breath that can be
seen in the cold air.
the ghost doesn't leave when
you try to make it.
the ghost stays,
the ghost taunts.
the anxiety doesn't seem to
stop.
and then suddenly the cold
air disappears.
the peace returns and
the ghost is at bay,
for now.

Ameera looked at the fat paunch and florid face of her boss, a man who lived for the story and the kudos it brought him but who rarely gave consideration to the people behind the drama. When had he become so hard? She reckoned that by the end of the year, he'd be dead, collapsed from a heart attack and she struggled to conjure any sympathy in that moment and instantly felt ashamed at displaying the same lack of compassion that he had.
