Angels in the Darkness

A Poem About Domestic Abuse

Born into the light but thrown into the night.

Innocent and unbroken, four souls held tight.

A little girl who sang once but her voice no longer came.

As the screams of the one she loved came over and over again.

One a little boy so brave but the punishment was too much.

Clasping the girl's hand so tight, seeking a protective touch.

Another little boy who always listened but now covered his ears.

The fearless cried out, giving into his first fears.

The smallest closed her eyes, an innocent little girl.

Marred forever now because of how she sees the world.

Hiding in the shadows, hoping for release.

But it never lasts long because there is no hope or peace.

Waiting for the storms to pass in the blackest nights.

Hiding in places that would give others frights.

But no matter how much they hid, it would always begin again.

A circle unbroken. An unforgivable sin.

Hiding in the closets, trying not to hear.

Hoping that he would stop and he wouldn't come near.

No pleas from her will work. A knife against the neck.

Wondering if it would come now. The life giver's death.

Trapped inside a bubble with the heat of the sun.

Wondering when it would be over or if it had just begun.

As the souls got older, they wondered if they were insane.

Or do they seek to give and take the same type of pain?

Now, they share a bond forever strong and unbroken.

With a past forgotten and forever spoken but unspoken.

And if they did speak, who would believe?

It's hard to understand that type of grief.

So, they push back the memories because there is not justice.

They try to forget their time as angels in the darkness.
