One cold night
in mid winter snow,
the clock struck ten
as the fire brightly glow.
I settled down
as I began to retire
when a gust of wind
blew out the fire.
A dim blue light
flickered in the dark,
seconds later
it became a spark.
From that spark
formed an apparition,
I sat there frozen
beholding such a vision.
T'was an old friend
from years passed
but the curious thing was
he had breathed his last.
He had passed peacefully
at a ripe old age,
now you understand
why I found this strange?
His skin was pale
and his lips were blue
his frail, ghostly form
I could see straight through.
He pointed and spoke
"Your time has begun,
your chains are forged
by the wicked deeds you've done.
When the bell tolls one
expect more like me,
for you will be visited
by ghost one of three."
I straightened in my chair
as I scoffed and spat
"My old friend, Marley!
I cannot fathom that.
Always jesting
and fooling around,
I thought it had ended
When they put you in the ground!
Even in death
could you not be fair?
Oh my dear, Jacob
you're not even there!"
He turned and glided
into the night,
I watched as he went
as he swiftly took flight.
Then I decided
to retire to bed,
I needed to reason
with my bewildered head.
My candle was out
my night robe was on,
I awoke in terror
as the clock struck one.
