Affection has no price
but an expensive vice
is the apple of your eye.
Dish out the money
fives, tens, the twenties
like it’s gonna keep you warm at night.
Feeling is the basis
that’s like a hidden oasis
In this solid cold
unforgiving world.
A single touch
can make the hairs on my arm stand up
and praise the glory
that is your heavenly brush
I look around and see the world
that worships money above all
not knowing a single touch can
change a mind
or console a broken heart
affection apparently isn’t cool
too bad those who have it
take it for granted
like human affection is something
you can have without thinking.
Too bad too much
of the little touches
or side brushes
are fake beyond the
make of plastic
Affection is powerful
in its silent gentleness
it can rock a baby to sleep
or make a grown man tear
from all the love and tender
that a single touch can say
to them after a long day
a life of hardship that money can’t
even begin to convey the warmth
that affection seems to deliver
from the love and care of one
who has love to offer
rather than a stack thick with
frigid cold dollar bills
that’s like a bad adhesive to
the wound that life has dealt me
Now listen to me
spare me an ear or a moment of silence
whether you like me or not.
I'm trying to say
that those dollars
be it from your momma
father or guy on the street corner
cannot hold you at night,
the same way your phone or
your Gucci Fendi Prada purse
can’t keep you from crying
your eyes out
when you feel left out
of the fabric of society.
Rather, it’s the touch of a mother
close friend or brother
that can keep the tears from falling
and tearing you apart
when you have nothing to hold you up
other than that Burberry blouse
that’s out of style before it got in.
it’s simple human affection
that can rock your mind
and send a sonic boom
through the fake flimsy
that is platinum and gold.
Look for a hug a pat on the back
or a kiss from a loved one
rather than money that’s gonna get spent and
leave you reeling from your fears
feel the love and affection
and stop the hate and oppression
for just a second as I show my love
for you in the terms
that soothe the world.
