A Visit From a Ghost of Love

A Romantic Nightmare

Ghost Heart by Ripley Patton

Sometimes it's the love you desire to forget but cannot that haunts you in the night.

It can sneak up on you least expect it,

like a boogeyman that hides in the shadows under the bed.

He dreamt about her twice in one night.

The first dream took place in the midst of twilight.

She showed up at his place of work and smiled at him and told him she moved there.

She was going to work with him too.

Shocked, he asked her why it mattered.

She just smiled at him, touched his chest, and whispered,

“It does.”

The second dream took place when the sun rose.

He awoke and then returned to sleep with his eyes open.

It was a lucid comforting nightmare.

She held him and kissed him throughout.

Though he was not conscious, he could feel her warm velvety skin.

It felt as real as the the blanket that wrapped around his body.

His head rested on her shoulder,

feeling as tangible as the pillow that nested his cheek.

He awoke wishing the dream was real.

Though in an instant, the truth brought him to tears.

Laying in the fetal position, his legs trembled with trauma.

The love he yearned for in his sleep lived one-hundred twenty-nine miles away.

The love he yearned for in his sleep moved on and was smitten with another.

Love haunted him in the night.

Sometimes love that needs to be forgotten won't truly die.
