...The Sun-Washed Asphalt...

A Subdivision in June

The sun-washed asphalt divvies up the homes

Creating rigid boundaries for the mind

The pent up fury of lawnmowers in the sun

Lunchtime burgers next to toasted buns

The mailman plodding, heading down the street

Humidity sapping strength from tired feet

Those rigid boundaries dividing up the homes

The sun-washed asphalt resembling strips of time

A cranky blue jay squawking in the trees

A blazing cardinal ignores its angry pleas

The scent of fresh cut grass hangs in the air

The kitchen counter displaying market pears

The sun-washed asphalt is working on my mind

Its rigid boundaries dividing up the homes

The school children heading home in packs

Their teachers teaching theories, sometimes facts

Someday they’ll stand on porches in the heat

Then breathing deep, they’ll quietly take a seat
