A Study in Deconstruction

Breaking Myself for You

I.

The first time you said you loved me,

My gut reaction was panic.

The thought of forever with you

Was enough to send my body into shock.

II.

The first time you kissed me,

I thought your mouth held solar systems.

I never told you that

Your arms were my favorite resting place.

III.

The first time you held my hand,

I learned the meaning of comfort.

I saw a lifetime of Saturday mornings

All at once.

IV.

The first time you talked to me,

You asked how I felt about loneliness.

I said

Loneliness is only as big

As the silence that surrounds it.

V.

The first time you looked at me,

Your eyes lit up.

They don’t do that anymore.

At least, not around me.
