A Race

To Get Away From You

You know how sometimes you can smell a certain scent or hear a song and be taken back to another point in time?

Well I remember the smell of the neighborhood I used to live in as a child

And I remember the songs that the bugs would sing to beckon me back home before dark.

I remember trees so tall I thought they couldn't be climbed and the breeze flowing past me in the sunshine

I never recall feeling empty at all, or wanting to escape to a place far away

It's bizarre to think about things knowing that everything is connected

Like finding out things about yourself in places that are unexpected, or remembering how you used to feel because you feel that way again for a second

I remember the feeling of riding my bike home down the street before dusk, the smell of the thick summer air and the sensation of the wind pressing against my skin with each spin of the pedals

Now that I know how your breath feels on my skin, and I have the taste of your kiss in my mind divine, how your skin feels against mine. It's a race in my mind, a race against time, a race to forget you before I go blind.

I remember thinking about how big the world is from such a small mind, full of innocence and hope. I never remember thinking about sadness, or fear, or money. But now I'm drowning in debt, drowning in regret, drowning in my thoughts of you, begging to forget.

I wish I could just ride my bike back home before dusk with the sweet wind against my face cleansing any ugly thoughts inside my head, gently rinsing away the pain of the day as I ride towards a house that doesn't know your name.
