A Perfect Day

Outside

Damn.

It is a perfect day outside.

The breeze brushes the acorns

and the smell of charcoal reminds me

it's the weekend.

The steps I take are light,

the sun I feel consists of the right ingredients

between warm and cool.

Like when my cousin and I would light sparklers

near the bonfires.

My grandmother's sandwiches were all we ate.

My family's differences did not matter as much

during these types of days.

This August day

makes up for the stuck cars,

the almost hits and misses

during blizzard warnings

screaming on the television.

Today, the cars have rolled down windows,

with all of us shouting at each other in the streets.

It's our own warning:

"have fun now, since you'll suffer later."

When I am trudging through white castles,

with fabric suffocating my nostrils,

I will try not to forget this day.

But I know I will.

My South Dakotan mother will say this winter,

"There's no bad weather -

Just bad clothing."

I tell her to say that to victims of hurricanes,

see how that goes.

I do not know the air movement,

nor the radar that determines our fates.

I know our climate changes,

but I truly do not know what else will shake

nor the meteorologist's worries at night.

All I know is that I wish.

I wish we prepared in order to have better days.

I wish the south could move up here,

miles away from drowning houses.

I wish our steps did not warrant chaos.

I wish

that every day would be this August day.
