A Hero and His Watcher
The Forgotten Tale of the Oracle
Clear star-drops fall from the sky.
The Oracle folds her hands together.
It would be a bad day for her hero.
She hums softly,
thinking only of his task.
Poor, young hero.
She consults the stars once more,
she can feel his victory slipping away.
Perhaps also with his life?
Only time will tell.
The Oracle sits alone,
while the rain drips down, caressing her face.
The stars tell her one thing,
but her heart tells her another.
She can feel his sword clanging hard against metal.
He swings and falls,
her hero is wounded.
Wounded but not yet slain.
He stands again,
willing to risk it all.
Not for her, but for them,
his people.
His love and passion burn like a beacon in the night.
Sword against armor.
Sword against sword.
The sound is deafening.
The weight of the world rests gently on his shoulders.
Thought and reason slip away from his mind in the heat of the battle.
He stands tall,
shouting to be heard over the din.
He is not afraid.
He will fight until the end.
That is her hero.
The Oracle smiles.
She knows his task is far from complete,
but she feels his pride as enemy after enemy falls before him.
Not one dragon or monster could withstand the force of his conviction.
Finally, the hero approaches his destination.
The tower glimmers into view.
Her hero climbs the stairs,
the princess safe once again in his arms,
a prize hard won for his kingdom.
The Oracle smiles up at the stars,
her job is now over.
She settles in for the wait now,
knowing yet another young hero will soon pass through her doors.
Strong heroes,
proud heroes,
men full of dreams and fears.
But here she will sit,
waiting under the stars,
watching for her heroes.
