A Fight Against Time

Through the Eyes of a Young Man

“I need food…but not for myself,”

Fear was the only emotion the young man felt.

He slung on his bow, he picked up his spear,

He was heading into the jungle, but that was never his fear.

He was not a fighter but he knew that he’d have to fight,

Otherwise, soon his mother would start to see the light.

“I need food…but not for myself,”

Fear was the only emotion the young man felt.

His heart was pounding, his body was aching,

It was screaming at him to stop, but he knew he had to keep moving.

He was not a hunter, but he knew he’d have to hunt.

He told himself he was a man now; after all he’d be 12 at the end of the month!

“I need food…but not for myself,”

Fear was the only emotion the young man felt.

He spotted his target, he knew the theory,

He released the bow…ooh nearly!

He had no strength but he knew he had to be strong.

He was desperate and he had not a care for right and wrong.

“I need food…but not for myself,”

Fear was the only emotion the young man felt.

He was struggling with the weight, but he was almost there,

If he did not make it now, then surely life is not fair.

He was not a thief, so it didn't matter that he stole.

He had made it, but he was finished; body, mind and soul.

“I need food…but not for myself,”

Those were the last words the boy had said.

“He made it, he saved my life,

I don’t understand doctor, why did he lose the fight?!”

“He was not a fighter, yet he managed to fight.

He was not a hunter, yet he managed to hunt.

He had no strength but he would not give up.

But he did not feel hunger; fear was the only emotion the young man felt.

He needed food…for himself.”
