A Different Kind of Love
A Short Poem
A short poem by,
Kandis Kellie
We wear the weight of our lives on our shoulders,
No matter what the cost.
We wear everything we go through,
Especially when we’re lost.
We hold our broken hearts in the palms of our hands,
Hoping someone will take notice.
Most just turn and look away,
Except the ones close to us.
Society explains to us what family “really” is,
They tell us “this and that” and that blood is the key.
But something they forget is that,
Family isn’t what it used to be.
It’s not just a group consisting of parents and their children
It’s not a pedigree.
It’s the people we choose to love, and people who love us back
Regardless of their genealogy.
It’s the ones that choose to stay,
When we expect them not to.
The ones that take our broken hearts from our palm,
Because they know what we’re going through.
We may wear the weight of our lives on our shoulders,
And it won’t always be that way.
Because family will always be there to help with that weight,
And remind us that all will be okay.
