A Child Lies in the Ground

A Poem

I was small and helpless

A child in every way

The day it came and took my life

The day I went away

I looked up and it was there

Pointing straight at me

I tried to run but caught instead

A bullet, wild and free

They laid me in a coffin

My mother wept aloud

No comfort found was there for her

Among the sobbing crowd

You claim that I'm important

That I matter in this place

If that is true, then why was I

A victim of disgrace?

I should have been allowed to grow

To wander safe and sound

But death did come too soon and now

A child lies in the ground

Who caused this heartache? You may ask

I blame society

You chose the gun, and now I'm gone

Who will the next child be?
