A Poem

On this day 12 years ago...

There were many things...

I was yet to know.

I thought I knew love...

When I had only known a taste...

For as I held you crying in my arms...

I felt my 26 years were a waste.

For in that split second...

When you opened your beautiful eyes.

You transformed my life...

Like a dark night into sunrise.

As I stared into you...

I promised something that I felt you needed to know...

I would live my life for you...

At night I would stay awake.

Just to watch you breathe.

Get up for work in the morning...

And never want to leave.

Take you walking through the fields...

Sit by the river and stare.

At the golden reflection of forever...

Glistening from your hair.

I swore I'd try my best for you.

To teach you all I possibly could.

To keep you positive, strong...

Kind, thoughtful and good.

There were and are many things...

That you don't know.

The only essential is I love you now...

As I loved you then...

As the years have passed...

It's you who's been the teacher...

I, the pupil in denial.

For you have taught me so much of myself...

As well as been my constant smile.

I can never thank you enough...

For being in my life...

For every moment that we've had.

The greatest treasure I keep within the depths of my soul...

Is being your dad.

There was just so much...

My young heart didn't know.

Winds of change...

Have blown many seeds...

That were once sewn.

Yet one thing grows stronger...

Not weathered by any season.

Bringing with every second...

More meaning, more feeling.

My love...

The enduring eternal empire.

That will never go.

I promise you forever.

As I did...

I have been writing Poetry since I was a teenager. Now in my late thirties I enjoy it more than ever. I find it a wonderful release and it helps me to free my mind and understand myself and my emotions.
