A Poem

In the darkness of the night

By the river’s solemn shore

The city gives its light

Along the docks where boats do moor

The crowded streets move on

The people still awake

All air is filled with song

Obligations they forsake

Now under the night sky

In a world so far away

Brave men still do die

Freedom fighters, so they say

Courage, strength, and valour

Creditable to them all

Even with the lighter pallor

Of the death they do befall

The morning dawn does break

Across the somber land

And the coming of light will take

The terror of night in hand

The lark over head will fly

And lay watch to those below

From above in skies so high

What lies beneath, it does not know
