Unjaded
A Story of Love Through the Winters of Tyneside, England
Walking to school through the streets of our childhood
The snow rolling in from the ominous heights
The stark cobbled stone and the twisted old fence wood
Stood mute and depressed in the sombre street lights.
Our fingers were white and our toes beyond feeling
Our ears would ache sore as we froze to the core
But something about you was warm and appealing
And all that I knew was that I wanted more.
The gates of our schoolyard were darkly foreboding
The black flinted walls glistened sharper than coal
But a warm winter sun through the gloom came exploding
The day you first smiled and it melted my soul.
Through the old silent graveyard from school we would wander
Among the dead flowers and the Stonemason's art
Though snowflakes would fall still my thoughts would grow fonder
Your glances like jewels would enlighten my heart.
I call back to memory the day I first kissed you
'neath the frost laden boughs of the sycamore tree
That night as I lay in my bed how I missed you!
The warmth of your lips still encompassing me.
Then when we left school we would queue at the Centre
The jobs were so few and the prospects were bleak
But the warmth in your heart would encourage and mentor
As we trudged through the ice and snow week after week.
At last in the shipyards I found some employment
The cold wind would howl past the great hulls of steel
Those endless dark days where I knew no enjoyment
Gave way to the nights when your touch I would feel.
Long hours at the laundry did not see you falter
Not once were you heard to complain or protest
I knew without doubt as we stood at the altar
That I was a man unbelievably blessed.
As later that night we lay close and contented
The icy sleet drummed on the fogged window pane
A blizzard then came and bore down unrelented
But we were as one and as one did remain.
Now the years have passed by but your smile has not faded
It still lights the room like a flame in the night
The warmth of your beauty glows bright and unjaded
As you read to our children by soft candlelight.
Though bitter the winters we faced them together
And nature's harsh forces no victory won
The fires of our love will sustain us forever
And burn in our hearts like a radiant sun.
