The Man Who Was Once a Muppet

A Poem Dedicated to Steve Whitmire

A short found Poem that I wrote after the news broke about Steve Whitmire being fired from his role as Kermit the Frog. Bits of it contain reflections from the late Muppeteer on several interviews about his worries and passion for playing the character.

***

Just short of 40 years,

through laughter and much tears

27 of those were a lifetime

when we were as one.

I taught you

to bring so much joy

as you taught me

about your individuality

It has been a world

of make pretend

into my adult life.

we sang

we danced

sometimes

even both.

It might have been a career

that evolved into a calling.

Allowing me to be you

with the dexterity

of my hand

and the soul

of your voice.

Such prowess

I thought

“It’s not something that can be taught”

You need the intuition,

a gift

that only a few possess.

It’s been 40 years

with much laughter and tears

27 were a lifetime

Nine months has been the end

As I reflected

grieved

but laughed

remembering

as you once said

that in life

It’s not easy

being green.
