My Shopping Addiction

This poem is about my shopping addiction and making life changes to overcome learned behaviors.

Rock Bottom has a basement with a foundation leak.

I drown in the water.

The things I own, now own me.

I can’t see the floor or the walls.

Only the ceiling.

Mountains of clutter tumble down on my sanity.

I peel back the layers.

I shop to fill a void in my soul.

This is a learned response to depression.

The clutter gene runs through my bloodstream thick.

Third generation hoarder.

A physical response to an emotional problem.

I fear running out of items.

I find comfort in ownership.

I could open up a retail shop.

My home is my storage warehouse.

My warehouse is filled with shoes and clothing.

I will never use all of these items.

Some people drink.

I buy shoes.

This is my feel good outlet.

Shoes are like a drug to me.

They give me a temporary happiness.

I keep buying more to get the same feeling.

No matter how many I have,

I will always want more.

Too much is never enough.

It took 36 years to open my eyes.

I am healing from a lifetime of bad behaviors.

A lifetime of addictions.

I am always chasing my next purchase,

Like chasing a high

Like chasing a kite in the wind that you can never seem to reach.

It will get stuck in the trees much like your happiness

Until one day you see what you are doing

This change must start now.

I must reprogram my mind

I must separate by wants from needs.
