I Am

Because of My Skin

I don't know where to start

I mean

Where do I begin

They made me feel like I was sin

Because of my skin

Trapped in twisted scripture

They painted a very specific picture

That I came from nothin’

But cotton pick'n, whipp'ns and lynchn's

When in reality, my lineage consists of those

Emboldened by knowing

We are the Chosen

Deep in our bones

Co-heirs to the throne

Bearers of love and light

So I have learned to fight

For my right

To walk in my true identity

Because the truth is

I Am

And I Am because of my skin
