For the third time tonight alone
She lets out an annoyed
And exasperated sigh
Yes, I'm a girl
She says again
For the perhaps millionth time
There's an uproar
Guys laughing nervously
Snippets of sexist remarks
Reach her ears
One voice, the leader of the pack
The dominant wolf
Rises above the others
So, are you hot?
She looks down at herself
Her unkempt hair
That needs a washing
Her stained, frayed, and greying shirt
That should have long ago been thrown out
But is just too damn comfortable
No, she's not hot
She looks like crap
She's sitting alone in the dark
By the flickering, dim light
Of her PC screen
She's an ugly mess
Not trying to impress anyone
Just playing her favourite video game
Relaxing and unwinding
In comfy pajamas
And fuzzy socks
Finally she speaks
Deterring the question
Are we playing or what, noobs?
She says laughingly
Trying to spur them into gameplay
But their fragile masculinity
Is shaken by this word
Not meant to be an insult
But taken that way
Oh, and how are your stats
They ask, jeering
There's silence as they look
She can feel them scrutinising
Her gaming character
The silence goes on for too long
She knows what's coming
Well, you're just a bitch
One says
I bet your boyfriend fixed your gear
Says another
She's a faker
She probably can't even play
Poser
Tease
Slut
Ugly
Fat
More insults are hurled at her
Names called
All because she's better at
Playing a video game
Than these boys are
All because she didn't behave
Like a sex kitten at their prompting
Shaking her head silently
She switches off her computer
Deciding that ignoring the harassment
Is better than taking the abuse
She stares at the blank screen sadly
She really wanted to play that game
