The Way Around a Woman

Free Woman

What are women without their voice? We are nothing, really. Just something to make supper and take up space. We, as women, need to stand up for ourselves and truly try to make a difference in this world. This poem explores the expectations of a woman from a man, her "superior." Here, we learn that a woman's voice is not baggage, but the essence of herself.

"Yes sir, I'll draw your bath for you.

No, sir, I didn't forget to make your supper.

I'm sorry, sir, it won't happen again.

Every day, women are used as conduits for masculine supremacy.

We are expected to submit and keep shut, like children.

Our bodies determine our worth, our words nothing but baggage.

We, as women, are forced to remain oblivious to our situation for in reality,

a strong woman is a crazy woman.

We lie down at the feet of man, awaiting our next order.

We stay in the arms of our abusers out of fear.

No woman should be fearful of man, for we are all human;

All the same.

None greater. None smaller.

Not all men are the same,

but if you've been offended by this truth,

you are part of the problem."
